Who We Are

Fairbanks Senior Center, officially entitled The North Star Council on Aging , is a non-profit organization established in 1973. We are supported by volunteer workers and private and corporate donations. Federal, State and local government grants help defray a portion of our costs.

Mission Statement

The North Star Council on Aging strives to meet the needs of older adults by providing services which enhance and promote quality of life, self-determination, independent living, and dignity.

Our Purpose
To promote dignity and independence of Alaskan seniors while assisting them in leading productive and meaningful lives. Hot, nutritious meals, leisure and exercise activities are provided, as well as a special place for fellowship.

Programs Offered
For Fairbanks and North Pole community home bound seniors age 60 and over, we provide nutritious food through the Meals on Wheels Program. We also provide door-to-door transportation services for medical appointments, prescription pickups, grocery shopping and other needs as resources allow. We are always looking for volunteers to deliver meals and help provide transportation to our community’s elders. Please volunteer if you can; even one day a week helps.
For seniors age 60 and over who have difficulties with some of their home chores, we offer the services of a homemaker. Simply give us a phone call and we will assist qualified individuals.

We have a new program that can help with pet care services i.e. walking your pet, cleaning litter boxes, transportation to veterinarian, grooming appointments and shopping for pet food and supplies. Give us a call and we’ll get you in contact with our volunteer who heads the Pet Care Program.

Be A Supporter
We invite you to become a supporter through volunteering or donating. You can also support your Fairbanks Senior Center by becoming a member. The cost is $25 for individuals and $35 for couples per year. Membership includes a monthly newsletter and a vote on issues that come before the members. Contact us for an application.

Come Visit
You do not have to be a member to use the Fairbanks Senior Center. Grab a cup of coffee and a pastry and socialize with old (or make new) friends. The Center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, for socializing, computer use (we have internet access), watching a movie or television, or relaxing with a good book or newspaper in our comfortable library. Lunch is served every weekday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5 for seniors (60 and over) and $9 for non-seniors. Check our calendar, provided in the monthly newsletter, for dates and times for exercises classes, yoga, crafting, cards (bridge, pinochle, hand and foot, cribbage) Wii and other games. Special activities take place in the evenings or on weekends.

We can also help you with referrals for services as well as provide assistance in completing forms. Stop by and see our library of brochures and pamphlets.
